I love to teach! I have a degree in music education, and over 20 years of experience teaching people how to sing. This year, I worked hard to earn my post-baccalaureate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Pacific University, and learned even more about the physiology of the human voice and the science of sound.

The two areas of voice that interest me the most, and that I am best suited to address:

Vocal physiology

After many years of studying vocal physiology and using this information in my own singing, as well as that of my students, I have come to believe strongly in the value of learning everything you can about the way your voice works. Although we all have a unique vocal tone, we also have a lot of control of the sounds we make through placement, support, air flow, vowel choice, mouth shape and dynamics. My goal is for you to have that control.

Emotional growth and regulation through singing

Singing is my happy place, so I have learned a lot about the scientific reasons for this. Turns out, singing releases oxytocin (a hormone that plays a crucial role in social bonding and emotional regulation) and reduces cortisol (hormone released during stressful situations triggering your fight or flight response).

Singing also stimulates the vagus nerve that activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for slowing your body down, and transitioning from our “fight or flight” to  our “rest and digest” response. Truly, if you could put singing in pill form, it would be a very powerful anti - depressant! When people come to lessons asking me if their voice is good enough to sing, I say a resounding YES! I think everybody should be singing, and it can help everyone.

Layered on top of all this good stuff is the vulnerability required to sing. What a powerful process to be vulnerable and move through it, and learn how powerful you truly are. Singing is first and foremost about having the courage to show the world what you are like on the inside because after all…
